Professional Dentistry for Your Child

family dental care in Burlington NC

As a parent, it can be challenging to fully understand your child’s dental care needs. The dentists at Fuller Dental are trained in pediatric dentistry and will be happy to help you and your child establish good early oral hygiene habits. As a child ages, their dental needs change, and the staff at Fuller Dental can walk you through those changes, building a foundation for lifelong healthy habits.

When should my child first see a dentist?

Fuller Dental recommends scheduling your child’s first appointment when their primary teeth first erupt. These early visits will be focused on preventative dentistry and early disease detection. They also allow your child to become familiar with the staff and environment to prevent later dental fear. A check up every six months is recommended.

Common Dental Problems Among Children

Cavities are one of the most common dental complaints among children. Many people consider primary teeth almost disposable, but they are very important. Primary teeth are critical for speech development, chewing to allow proper nutrition, and even self-esteem.

What can I do for my child’s dental hygiene?

Starting from birth, clean your child’s mouth with a soft-bristled infant tooth brush at least once a day to remove bacteria and clean the gums. Starting at around two years old, there are several things parents can do to ensure their child’s oral health:

  • Brush twice a day with fluoride toothpaste
    • Assist or perform the brushing yourself – your child is not capable of effective brushing
    • Make sure your child spits out rather than swallows the toothpaste
  • Floss once a day
  • Enforce a healthy diet
    • Limit your child’s access to sugary drinks and snacks
  • Follow guidelines for nursing, bottle, and sippy cup use
