Dental Anxiety Isn’t Weird. And You Don’t Have to “Tough It Out.”

Being afraid of the dentist is not childish. It’s not silly. And it’s definitely not something you should just push through and ignore. We’ve been welcoming patients to our Forestdale Drive office for over 45 years. In that time, we’ve met thousands of people who felt nervous walking through our door. Some were a little uneasy. Some hadn’t seen a dentist in a decade because the fear was that strong.

Every single one of them was welcome. And every single one of them deserved care that respected how they felt. If you’ve been avoiding the dentist, you don’t have to tough it out anymore.

Dental Anxiety: You Don't Have to Tough It Out in Burlington, NC

You’re Not Alone

Dental anxiety is one of the most common fears out there. Millions of adults deal with it. Some studies suggest it affects up to 20 percent of people. That means when you’re sitting in the waiting room with sweaty palms and a racing heart, you’re not the odd one out. You’re part of a big group of people who feel exactly the same way.

So let’s stop pretending it’s something to be embarrassed about. It’s not. It’s real, and it’s common.

Where Does Dental Fear Come From?

Most of the time, it traces back to something specific.

  • Maybe you had a painful experience as a kid.
  • Maybe someone spoke to you in a way that made you feel small.
  • Maybe you lost control of a situation and never forgot it.
  • Maybe you just heard scary stories growing up and never had a chance to replace them with good ones.

Sometimes there’s no clear reason. The fear just lives there. Whatever the cause, we’re not here to analyze it. We’re here to work around it. Your job isn’t to explain yourself. Your job is just to show up.

What We Do Differently

When you tell us you’re nervous, everything changes on our end. In a good way. We slow down. We explain every step before we do it. And we tell you what you’ll feel, how long it’ll take, and what happens next. No surprises.

We also offer things that make the visit more comfortable:

  • A warm neck wrap to ease tension in your shoulders
  • A soft blanket if you get cold
  • A massage chair to help you relax
  • Your choice of music or a TV show on the overhead monitor
  • Breaks whenever you need them

And we listen. If you raise your hand, we stop. If you need a minute, you get a minute. You’re in control the whole time.

A Script for When You Call

Many nervous patients don’t know how to bring it up when they book. So here’s a simple script you can use:

“Hi, I’d like to schedule an appointment. I want to be upfront; I get really anxious at the dentist. Is there anything you can do to make it easier?”

That’s it. You don’t have to explain. You don’t have to justify. Just say it. Our front desk team hears this all the time, and they’ll note it in your chart so everyone on the team knows before you arrive.

Start Small If You Need To

You don’t have to book a full cleaning and exam on your first visit back. Some patients just come in to meet us. We’ll show you around. You can sit in the chair. Ask questions. Then you leave. That’s a win. That’s progress.

The next visit might be a simple look. The one after that, a cleaning. You set the pace.
